Orphan Train DNA Project

This DNA project hopes to identify ancestry of the orphan train riders and their descendants for those trying to learn more about their family history and connect to other members of their family.

Using genetics it is hoped that siblings can locate each other or

descendants of orphan train children can find out their ancestral groups.
There are several types of tests available. It is also a good idea to have as many family members test if possible to narrow down maternal and paternal matches.
The Y DNA test is for finding your paternal line ancestry. Only males can be tested since only males have a Y chromosome which passes from father to son.

The mtDNA test is for finding your maternal line ancestry. Both males and females can be tested since you get your mtDNA from your mother. Only females pass their mtDNA on to their children.

The Autosomal or Family Finder test is for finding your both maternal and paternal ancestry. Both males and females can be tested and FamilyTreeDNA guarantees finding others that have tested back to 5 to 6 generations.
